Current anti-depressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) drugs alleviate stress, anxiety and depression in part by calming overactive neurons in the brain.  They achieve this by reducing neurons’ serotonin receptor populations, which attenuates their electrical excitability.

SSRI drugs use an indirect, two-step method of action.  First, they prevent neurons from absorbing serotonin molecules present in the brain’s synapses, which raises the concentration of serotonin in the brain.  Secondly, to maintain homeostasis, neurons eventually adapt to this enriched serotonin environment by building fewer serotonin receptors.  This change normally takes about seven weeks, at which point SSRI drugs become effective.

SSRI drugs are a valuable and effective solution to mental health issues for millions of people, but millions more are unable to benefit due to their side effects, which can be pronounced. Like all monomolecular drugs, SSRIs are delivered throughout the body which causes side effects.
